BMW 5 Series DIY guide
Fitting a larger display is quite manageable when the dashboard comes apart in the right order. These 17 photographs show where each panel, plug and cable belongs.

This walkthrough is for the BMW 5 Series F10 saloon and F11 Touring with a compatible CIC or NBT system. The trim and wiring are very similar on left- and right-hand-drive cars, but always compare the original iDrive menu and LVDS plug before ordering.
What you will need
- Plastic trim-removal tools
- Phillips and Torx screwdrivers
- Insulating or cloth harness tape
- Soft cloth for the dashboard trim
- Cable ties
- A tray for the removed screws
BMW F10/F11 installation steps
Keep the screws from each panel together, and leave final reassembly until the screen, original iDrive display and sound have all been tested.
-

Lift the centre vent panel
Start along the lower edge and work across the trim a little at a time. Once the clips release, support the panel rather than letting it hang from its wiring.
-

Remove the display and head-unit screws
Undo the screws holding the factory display and CD head unit. Put them somewhere safe; several are small and easy to lose.
-

Take out the original display
Bring the screen forward with both hands. There is not much spare cable behind it, so avoid pulling sharply.
-

Release the control panel
Slip a plastic tool under the CD and climate-control panel, then ease the clips free from one side to the other.
-

Unplug the control panel
Hold the panel while disconnecting its factory plug, then set it on a soft cloth where it cannot be scratched.
-

Slide the CD head unit forward
Remove the two screws beside the head unit and pull the unit forward just far enough to reach the rear connector.
-

Disconnect the main power plug
Release the Quadlock locking lever and draw the connector straight out of the factory head unit.
-

Move the fibre-optic insert
If your plug contains the green fibre-optic cable, unclip its small insert and fit it into the same pin position in the Android harness. If there is no fibre-optic cable, move on.
-

Connect the Android harness
The new harness sits between the car wiring and the original head unit. Lock both plugs fully and check that the fibre-optic insert has not backed out.
-

Run the USB lead past the SRS cover
Hold the right-hand SRS cover out of the way with tape and feed the USB lead behind it. Do not unplug the cover's flat cable, as doing so can log an SRS fault.
-

Bring USB into the storage compartment
Pull enough cable into the compartment to make everyday use easy, then clip the SRS cover back into place.
-

Place the head unit and panel back
Reconnect the original control panel and settle the CD unit back into the opening. Leave the screws loose for now; there is still a sound check to do.
-

Connect the screen cables
Plug the original LVDS lead into the labelled LVDS port, followed by the Android power lead, GPS antenna and optional 4G antenna. Position the GPS antenna where metal trim will not shield it.
-

Check the sound before reassembly
Reconnect power and play audio from Android. If it is silent, connect the harness Audio Out plug to the car's AUX input, choose Manual under AUX switching in the Android factory settings, and select AUX in the original BMW radio.
-

Finish the 10.25-inch version
For a 10.25-inch unit, refit the head unit, control panel and centre vent, then secure the Android display with its screws.
-

Fit the 12.3-inch mounting bracket
The larger screen uses the supplied plastic bracket. Screw it into the original display position, connect the screen and make sure the screen clips firmly to the bracket.
-

Finish the 12.3-inch version
Once the display and sound tests pass, refit the CD unit, climate panel and centre vent. Tuck the loom into the open spaces behind the head unit so no cable is trapped or sharply bent.
The finished F10/F11 installation
The screen should sit level above the centre vents with no pressure on the surrounding trim. Run through the original iDrive menu, CarPlay or Android Auto, steering-wheel buttons, Bluetooth, GPS and reversing camera before the first drive.

Choosing the right F10/F11 screen
UGODE offers compatible 10.25-inch and 12.3-inch displays for BMW F10/F11 CIC and NBT systems. Compare your original menu and LVDS plug before selecting an option.
Common questions
Why does the Android side have no sound?
Start with the fibre-optic insert: if the car has one, it must be in the new harness. Cars that carry Android audio through AUX also need Audio Out connected to the AUX input, AUX selected in iDrive and the correct AUX switching setting on the Android side.
Why does the original BMW menu show “No signal”?
Reseat the LVDS lead at both ends and confirm that the Android factory setting matches the car's CIC or NBT system and original screen resolution.
Should the panels be screwed back before testing?
No. Rest the head unit and panels safely in position, test every function, and only then tighten the screws. It saves dismantling the dashboard twice if a plug needs attention.
